يمثل بليز باسكال أنموذجاً للصفاء المسيحي. إن هذا المفكر العبقري الذي اهتدى إلى مبادىء الهندسة وهو في الثانية عشرة، وألّف بحثاً في المخروطات في السادسة عشرة، وبنى آلة حاسبة في العشرين، واهتتدى في الثالثة والعشرين إلى التجارب المثبتة لوجود (الفراغ)، و كتب بحثاً في توازن السوائل لا يزال محافظاً على قيمته حتى الوقت الحاضر، وألّف فيما بعد "الرسائل الريفية" المدهشة الرائعة ووضع كتابه "خواطر" دفاعاً عن المسيحية، ... اعتبره الكثيرون مفكراً عظيماً وفيلسوفاً وعالماً وناسكاً فهو كان أكثر خشوعاً وإحساناً واستكانة، ولم يفكر، وهو المريض الدائم منذ سن الثامنة عشرة والعاجز عن العمل في السنوات الأربع الأخيرة من حياته، إلا في الإستفادة من أمراضه، وبذل التضحيات والسيطرة على الذات والحرب على البؤساء.
سيجد القارىء لهذا الكتاب أن الأخلاق عند باسكال لم تكن بضاعة للتصدير تكتفي بمجرد الألفاظ. لقد عاش هذا الرجل مبادئه الأخلاقية. ولما مات وجدت على ثيابه "تميمة" حافظ عليها كذكرى عن ليلة تصوف أحس خلالها برعشة علوية تسري في أوصاله، وعرف ما يعرفه أهل الإنخطاف والوجد في لحظة الوصال بالذات الربانية ... وكما يقول تيرتوليان، لا يعتقدن أحد أن حياة المسيحيين حياة أسى وكآبة. نحن لا نتخلى عن المذات إلا إلى أخرى أعظم منها".
وعليه، يستعرض هذا الكتاب حياة بليز باسكال (1628م -1662 م) وإنتاجه العلمي والفكري (فلسفته)، ومنتخبات من أعماله وأقواله.
