تعتمد السيمائية في تحليلها للنصوص على متابعة حركة الدوال في النص لإستكناه المدلولات، والوصول إلى قيمة العلامة وفاعليتها في النص، والأثر الدلالي الذي تحدثه فيه، ونقد النص العربي القديم قائم على طبيعة تحليل العلاقة بين اللفظ والمعنى، أي بين (الدال والمدلول) للوصول إلى الدلالة، ولم يكن ذلك ميدان استغال النقاد واللغويين فحسب، بل تعداه إلى ميادين أخرى، منها: الفقه وأصوله، والمنطق وعلم الكلام، وعلم التفسير، والفلسفة...
أما فيما يتعلق بسبب اختيار عبد القاهر الجرحاني (ت471هـ) تحديداً فذلك راجع إلى ميزة هذا الناقد، وقدرته في تناول النص وتحليله وفق معطيات الدال والمدلول أولاً، ودراسته للنص في ذاته ثانياً، فقد انطلق تحللي هذا الناقد من داخل النص بغية عن إسقاط المعطيات الخارجية عليه.
ويعد الجرحاني أول من كسر طرق (التوصيف) للبلاغة العربية بشكل موسع، وحوَل ميدان العمل فيها من الوصف إلى التحليل، ومن دراسة الناص إلى دراسة النص، ومن كون البلاغة قوالب، قد تبدو جامدة-إلى مجموعة أساليب حيوية في فهم النص.
