تندرج المواد المبحوثة في هذا القاموس ( قاموس التراث الشعبي العراقي ) تحت مصطلح ( فلكلور ) بما يعنيه من معتقدات فطرية وتقاليد وطقوس وحكايات وأساطير وأمثال وأقوال مأثورة اعتمد مؤلفه الأستاذ حسين علي الجبوري على تراث الأجداد في تأليفه ويتضمن التعابير المحكية في اللغة العراقية مرتبة على حروف الهجاء الشعبية وقال في مقدمته : بأنه انتفع من ( قاموس العادات والتقاليد والتعابير المصرية ) في مادته حيث اتبع منهجه وسار في تأليفه على طريقته التي اتبعها المؤرخ المصري " أحمد أمين " في تقسيم المواد على حروف الهجاء وكان أسلوبه أسلوب أمين في جمع المادة من أفواه الناس ومن المصادر وتقييدها في حقول وتوزيعها على الحروف وفق الموضوع المراد بحثه على اعتبار أنها الطريقة الأكاديمية المتبعة في الدراسات القديمة والمعاصرة . واستغرق العمل به ثلاثة عقود .
يضم القاموس ( 423 ) مصطلحاً شعبياً من التراث العراقي تم شرحها وبيان معانيها والمناسبة التي قيل فيها كل مصطلح أو مثل بعد تقسيم القاموس إلى أبواب حسب الموضوع ونذكر من هذه : 1- لوازم الأدب ، 2- إستحضار الروح حسب رأي علي غالب ، 3- طقوس إستحضار الروح ، 4- الإستجارة بغير الحسين ، 5- الأفندي المصري ، 6- أسماء الناجيات ، 7- باب الله في المأثورات الإسلامية ، 8- طريقة التبخير عند العراقيين والمصريين ، 9- برد العجوز في حكاية أهالي طويريج ، 10- برد العجوز عند المصريين ، 11- تحديث الأخبار عن بئر برهوت ( ... ) ، وعناوين أخرى .
