لقد ازداد الاهتمام بالفولكلور في السنوات الأخيرة، لا في الأوساط الأكاديمية وحدها، ولكن بين أكثر المثقفين في مصر والعالم العربي، واستتبع ذلك بالضرورة العمل الموصول على محاولة التعريف بالمصطلحات المرتبطة بهذا المجال. ولا يدّعي أحد أن القيام بمعجم خاص بالفولكلور مهمة سهلة... فإن المصطلحات مرنة، تتشكل مدلولاتها، وهي تختلف باختلاف البيئات والأجيال... من هنا يمكن القول بأن هذا المعجم الذي نتصفحه إنما هو في واقع الأمر، محصلة جهود علماء ورواة وهواة في هذا المجال الإنساني الأصل والحي والمتطور، وهو مجال الفولكلور. وهذا ما سمح للمؤلف بالاطلاع على معاجم وموسوعات كثيرة، وبخاصة عن العادات والتقاليد والعقائد والطقوس والحكايات والسير والألغاز والأمثال والحرف والصناعات والمعارف الشعبية. وهو معجم موجه إلى المعنيين بالفولكلور، وهو يتجاوز المصطلحات الخاصة بالمجتمع العربي، إلى المواد المتنوعة والمشهورة في القوميات والشعوب، على اختلافها، ويأمل المؤلف أن يكون معجمه حافزاً يزيد من اهتمام القارئ العربي بالفولكلور، الذي يصدر عن سلوك الإنسان، أياً كان وطنه، وأيّاً كانت بيئته الثقافية.
