فالأمة العربية في هذا الزمن تعيش فترة من أشد أدوار حياتها دقةً وأعظمها خطرًا، تتقاذفها فوضى فكرية بعيدة المدى بليغة الأثر، تحتلها نزعات متباينة تتجاذب في نواحي حياتها حتى صارت شيعًا وأعرابًا يتملكها الهيجان الفكري والعاطفي، فتحولت إلى فرق متنازعة وطوائف ومذاهب وتيارات متناحرة لا تمكث عند غاية، وتلك هي المسيرة التاريخية التي يتم خلالها التطور الذي يحدث في تشكيل الفكر القومي العربي الحديث وإن كان لم يكتمل بعد.
فهل حقًا نحن أمة تفتقر إلى الشعور القومي الصحيح الذي يوحّد جهودنا ويدفعنا إلى الإنتاج؟ أم أن الشعور القومي يحتل العقول والأرواح والأفئدة في كل مكان، لكننا لا ندري كيف نحوله إلى أداة عمل. فالإنجاز القومي والعمل الكامل يتطلب أن ننظر في الحاضر مليًا ونستنبط الماضي جليا ونتطلع للمستقبل بأفئدة ملؤها الأمل، ونكبر على الحوادث الآنية ونترفع عن القضايا الجانبية التي تتخبط فيها الأمة، وننفذ إلى لب حياتنا الحاضرة وجوهرها لكي نفهم حقيقتها ومعناها. لهذا كان من الأهمية بمكان أن نلتفت إلى الشخصية العربية التي أوجدها محيطها الطبيعي وميراثها الاجتماعي والثقافي، ونلتفت أيضًا إلى الحضارة الغربية التي كادت أن تغطي كل شيء في حياتنا من وسائل الثقافة إلى أدوات الترفيه إلى المأكل والملبس إلى وسائل النقل والاتصال، ونقارن ونتعظ ونستفيد لكي نطفو وننجو. هذا ما سنراجعه ونتحاور به مع الذات مباشرة وبالمجاز في هذا الكتاب…..).
