ثورات "ربيع الشعوب" في عام 1848 كانت قومية وديمقراطية ورومانسية معاً، سياسية وإجتماعية وأيديولوجية معاً، معقدة ومتناقضة ومتداخلة، وكانت وراءها أوهام رومانسية وطاقات قومية ووقائع إقتصادية وتحولات إجتماعية وصراعات طبقية، كانت تكريساً لتحالف الشعوب المقدس في مواجهة تحالف الملوك المقدس، مثلما كانت تبشيراً بحرب الأكواخ على القصور.
وفي تلك الثورات، المتعددة الأهداف والأشكال، حارب يورجوازيون وبروليتاريون وفلاحون جنباً إلى جنب، وإنما بقيادة مثقفين ديمقراطيين، في مواجهة دول وراثية وسلالات حاكمة واوتوقراطيات رجعية وجيوش ارستقراطية.
ولكن على الرغم من كل برقشة ثورات 1848، فقد كانت واحدة في الروح وفي العدوى، وهذه الوحدة هي ما يحاول أن يستشفه مؤلف هذا الكتاب، جان سيغمان، الأستاذ في التاريخ، والباحث في "المعهد القومي للبحوث الإجتماعية"، والمدرس في كلية الآداب بالسوربون، والمحاضر في معهد الدراسات السياسية، وفي مركز الدراسات الجرمانية، وفي مركز الدراسات الأوروبية العليا، والعضو في ندوة تاريخ المقاومة الأوروبية.
