"ينادي بأعلى صوته، تعقبهُ الأجراس، يزداد عددها، وتتداخل دقاتها، ها هو البائع قد أتى في وقته المحدد، بعربته الصغيرة، يتجول بين الشوارع الضيقة، وينادي بين المنازل والمقاهي: "أيسسس.. كرررريم.. آآآآيسسس... كرييييم"، يتسابق الأطفال إلى العربة ضاحكين، كل واحد يحمل في يديه بعض القطع الفضية ليشتري ما طاب له، أغلقتُ الكتاب وتركتهُ جانباً، وفي عجالة ذهبتُ إلى الداخل لأخذ النقود التي كنتُ أحتفظ بها في حقيبة المدرسة؛ ثم خرجتُ من المنزل مسرعة، حافية القدمين، أدعو الله تعالى اللحاق بالعربة التي سرعان ما تتوارى عن الأنظار!...
ظللتُ أتتبع صوت الأجراس التي بدت تتداخل مع أصوات المارة وأصبحت حادة بشكل غير مريح، وأمام أقدم المقاهي الشعبية وجدتُ العربة تقف وقد اجتمع حولها مجموعة من الأطفال لم يعتادوا لبس الأحذية؛ اقتربتُ من البائع، وأنفاسي متقطعة بسبب الجري، اشتريتُ "آيس كريم" بنكهة الفانيليا، وجلستُ على أحد المقاعد الخشبية وصوت أم كلثوم يصدح في المذياع "اللي شفتو قبل ما تشوفك عنيه... عمر ضايع يحسبوه إزي عليا"، فجأة شعرتُ بهزة تحت قدمي"، ليسقط مني ما تبقى من "الآيس كريم"، ركضتُ وجسدي ينتفض، ودقات قلبي سريعة كادت أن تقف"!...
