"تأملات ميتافيزيقية في الفلسفة الأولى" هي سيرة ديكارت الماورائية، نقلها إلى العربية الدكتور كمال الحاج ووضع لها عنوان فرعي "تثبت أن الله موجود وأن نفس الإنسان تتميز عن جسمه" ولهذا عدّها المترجم من أفخر المصنفات الفلسفية إطلاقاً استخدم كاتبها ضمير المتكلم. إنها حكاية ديكارت ذاتاً .. حكاية فكره الخاص في أعلى درجات التجريد والتذهين.
يبدأ الكتاب مع مشهد ديكارت وهو يوجه خطابه (كتابه) إلى عمداء وعلماء الكلية اللاهوتية المقدسة في باريس، يشرح لهم أسباب تأليفه ومضمونه ويترك لهم الحكم عليه.
يتضمن الكتاب تأملات ميتافيزيقية ستة لديكارت ويطلب من القارىء "أتوسل إلى من يريد قراءة هذه التأملات ألا يحكم عليها قبل أن يكون قد قرأ الإعتراضات كلها مع ردودي عليها".
أما عن ملخص التأملات الستة فهي: 1- التأمل الأول في الأشياء التي يمكن أن توضع موضع الشك، 2- التأمل الثاني: في طبيعة الروح الإنسانية التي نعرفها أحسن مما نعرف الجسم، 3- التأمل الثالث: في أن الله موجود، 4- التأمل الرابع في الصواب والخطأ، 5- التأمل الخامس: في جوهر الأشياء المادية ثم عود إلى أن الله موجود، 6- التأمل السادس: في وجود الأشياء المادية وحقيقة الفارق بين نفس الإنسان وجسمه.
وعبر صفحات الكتاب يبدو ديكارت عقلانياً، دون أن ينكر الدور الذي يلعبه الإيمان، فبدا وكأنه يساوي بين العقل والإيمان، يقول ديكارت "لم يُعطَ العقل ليكفر بالله، كما يظن الملحدون، وإنما في سبيل تقديم الأدلة العقلانية الوافية إلى أن الله موجود"، كما يشدد ديكارت على "الترتيب الواضح" للأفكار، وأما عن الفلسفة، لا دور تلعبه، إلا أن تعيد النظر في المفاهيم الراهنة، لترتيبها ثانية بطريقة واضحة، أي بأسلوب منطقي، كما يشرح أسباب وضع "الرسالة في المنهج" التي كان قد نشرها بالفرنسية " ولما كنت رجوت بتلك "الرسالة في المنهج" كل الذين يجدون في مؤلفاتي، ما يستحق النقد أن يتفضلوا بتنبيهي إليه" ويقصد بها ديكارت الإعتراضات التي وجهت إلى أفكاره ورده عليها.
يُذكر أن ديكارت كان قد عرض هذه التأملات، قبل نشرها على بعض المفكرين، في عصره، كي يمدوه بآرائهم وجهلهم من الفلاسفة واللاهوتيين ومنهم كاتيروس ومارسن وهوبز وغاسندي ... وغيرهم. وهكذا تكونت الإعتراضات ثم ردود ديكارت على الإعتراضات، وقد وردت مع التعليقات باللغتين العربية والفرنسية.
