يؤرّخ هذا الكتاب للتراث المعجميّ العربيّ منذ نشأته في القرن الثاني للهجرة وحتى القرن الثاني عشر. وقد أُفرد الباب الأوّل منه لبدايات النشاط المعجميّ التي شهدت جمع المدوَّنة اللغويّة فكانت عمادًا للمصنَّفات النحويّة والمعجميّة على السواء. أمّا البابان الثاني والثالث فيدوران على المعاجم المبوَّبة والمجنَّسة، ولا سيّما القضايا المنهجيّة التي استند إليها المعجميّون في مصنَّفاتهم. ويُظهر الكتابُ التنوّع الكبير في أنماط التصنيف المعجميّ العربيّ من حيث الموضوعات، وترتيب الموادّ، والاستيثاق من صحّتها وشواهدها، كما يُظهر المكانة الرفيعة والمحوريّة التي حظيت بها المصنَّفات المعجميّة في التراث العربيّ والإسلاميّ، مبيِّنًا أن نشأة المعجم العربيّ إنّما ترجع إلى جهود اللغويّين الأوائل في دراسة أصوات العربيّة وصرفها ونحوها ودراسة القرآن الكريم على وجه الخصوص، دونما تأثير أجنبيّ. وممّا وُفّق إليه الباحث من نتائج إرجاعُه نظامَ التقفية - أي الترتيب على الحرف الأخير - إلى النصف الأوّل من القرن الثالث للهجرة، وكشفُه عن نظام الزُّمر الدلاليّة التي كان ابن سيدة أوّل من اعتمدها على نحوٍ منهجيّ في كتاب المحكم، وتبيانُه أن هذه الزُّمَر هي التي أقام عليها ابن منظور منهجه في ترتيب موادّ لسان العرب.
