يتناول هذا الكتاب أسس الدراسة المعجمية العربية وأصولها على ضوء منهجية جديدة تستلهم معطيات العلوم الألسنية الحديثة.
وهو ليس بحثاً في المعاجم العربية القديمة والحديثة ولا في علم تأليف المعاجم مثلاً، ولكنه مقدمة ضرورية تؤسس من جديد القواعد والأصول التي لا بد من رؤيتها بوضوح. وهو إذاً من البحوث الأساسية التي تنظر في هيكلية البنى العربية وأقيستها وطرائق توليدها واقتباسها وحقولها المعجمية بمنهجية عن النظرية -وإنما تدخل عالم اللغة الغني الخلاق وتحاول أن تستخرج منه النواميس الدقيقة المتحكمة بهذا النظام.
وقد تصدى هذا البحث أولاً للأسس فبسط نظريته ومفاهيمه وبدأ بالمستويات الفونولوجية الأولى واثر الأجزاء في التطوير التركيبي والدلالي للمفردات، يبني دراسة لغوية ومعجمية تبحث في الأصول والصيغ والأشكال والروابط الدلالية والحقول المفهومية والأسس البنيانية لوضع الألفاظ وتوليدها في اللغة العربية، تلك التي تعتمد بشكل هام، على الجذور الثلاثية وما تبنيه من نظام اشتقاقي مميز يهيمن على اللغة.
وقد يرتبط بذلك كله بعض أبواب التوليد الخاص من عمليات جزئية مثل النحت والإبدال والقلب وتطويع الدخيل. وقد استخرج ههنا بشكل مجدد: قواعد الوزان السليم وإحصاء أبنية الثلاثي المصححة وبناء جدول التصريف على أساسها من جديد، وكذلك القواعد الواقعية المقتصدة في تشقيق الأفعال الرباعية وفصائلها...
وحاول أن يبتعد في الوقت نفسه عن التضخم والاستطراد فرأى أن يترك إلى حلقات أخرى، التوسع في المباحث المهمة التي قد تتجاوز بتفصيلها الشأن المعجمي بذاته بسبب خصوصيتها، ليقدم لها كتباً أخرى في "المصطلح" هي "مصطلح النحت والتعريب" و"مصطلح الاشتقاق والتصريف"...
