ولهذه المعجمية تأريخ طويل في اللغة العربية إبتداءً بأول معجم شامل (هو معجم العين) للخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي الذي ولد وعاش في القرن الثاني للهجرة (100هــ - 170هـ أو 175هـ) فمعجم جمهرة اللغة لابن دريد (231هـ) فمعجم البارع لابي علي انقالي (356هـ) فمعجم تهذيب اللغة لأبي منصور الأزهري (370هـ) فمعجم المحيط في اللغة للصاحب بن عباد (385هـ) فمعجم مقاييس اللغة ومعجم المجمل لابن فارس (395هـ) فمعجم الصحاح للجوهري (نحو 400هـ) فمعجما (المحكم) و(المخصص) لابن سيدة الأندلسي (458هـ) فمعجم (أساس البلاغة) للزمخشري (538هـ) فمعجم العباب للصغاني (650هـ) فمعجم (لسان العرب) لابن منظور (711هـ) فمعجم (القاموس المحيط) للفيروزابادي (817هـ) فمعجم (تاج العروس في شرح ألفاظ القاموس) للزبيدي (1205هـ) فمعجم (المحيط) و(قطر المحيط) لبطرس البستاني (1283هـ) فمعجم (أقرب الموارد في فصيح العربية والشوارد) للشرتوني (1325هـ/ 1907م) فمعجم المنجد للأب لويس المعلوف (1326هـ/ 1908م)...
إن هذا التاريخ المعجمي الطويل (من القرن الثاني للهجرة إلى القرن الرابع عشر للهجرة) لهو تاريخ حافل يسجل للمعجمية العربية أصالتها من خلال مناهجها المختلفة التي أثرت في مناهج المعجميات الأجنبية، ويحاول المستشرق هيوود في هذا الكتاب بيان تأريخ المعجمية العربية وتطور مناهجها اللغوية وأثرها في غيرها من المعجميات والكتاب لأهميته العلمية والموضوعية قد طبع أول مرة في ليدن / إي. جَيْ. بريل منذ عام 1960 وأٌعيد طبعه.
