يحتوي هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا على دراسات تطبيقية وأخرى نظرية من أصوات العربية وصرفها ونحوها على ضوء اللغات السامية في الفصل الأول من الدراسة تم إيضاح المواد بالدراسة اللغوية المقارنة، وتم التوقف عند مسألتين تاريخيتين هما بمثابة المدخل إلى سائر أقسام الكتاب باعتبارهما جزءاً من الأساس النظري الذي استند إليه في العمل، فأولاهما تناول لمحة عن الخصائص السامية المشتركة تظهر انتماء العربية إلى المجموعة السامية تمهيداً لتبيان موقعها فيها، والثانية تنظر في اللبنات الأولى للدراسة المقارنة كما تقع عليها في التراث العربي فتغدو كالعمق التاريخي للدراسة المقارنة.
أما الفصل الثاني فاحتوى على خطة مقترحة لدراسة العربية دراسة مقارنة في الأصوات والصرف والنحو. واحتوى الفصل الثالث والرابع والخامس على نماذج تطبيقية، يعرض أولها لقضية صوتية هي الصوامت العربية وتطوّرها التاريخي من حيث محافظتها على الأصل أو ابتعادها عنه، ويتناول الثاني فكرة المقايسة وينظر في أثرها في باب صرفي محدد هو الضمائر ويشتمل الثالث على ما قد يصلح أن يكون مدخلاً لدراسة الأدوات دراسة مقارنة في عدد من المسائل المتعلقة بها.
ولما كان القصد من هذه الدراسة هو تحديد ما تتميز به العربية ضمن المجموعة السامية، فقد تم فيها النظر في جملة من المسائل الصرفية والنحوية التي تتغرد بها العربية في تلك المجموعة أو التي تشارك به غيرها بعض المشاركة دون أن تكون الظاهرة من الساميّ المشترك.
