شكلت فلسطين على مختلف مراحل التاريخ محور إهتمام الحضارات والدول المختلفة نظراً لأهميتها التاريخية والدينية والإستراتيجية، إذ بدأت الهجرات تتوالى على فلسطين منذ الألف الثالث قبل الميلاد عن طريق الكنعانيين والفينيقيين والعموريين... إلخ، وصولاً إلى الفتح الإسلامي مما أدى إلى إمتزاج حضاري في هذه المنطقة لازالت آثاره باقية حتى يومنا الحاضر.
وبإعتبار فلسطين مهد الديانات السماوية فقد اشتد التنافس الديني على هذه المنطقة، وأخذ أشكالاً مختلفة، وتعدّ الحملات الصليبية خير دليل على ذلك.
ولقد نجحت بريطانيا في حسم الصراع جزئياً ومرحلياً لصالحها من خلال نجاحها في إنشاء أول قنصلية لها في القدس، وتولت من خلالها رعاية المسيحيين البروتستانت واليهود في فلسطين.
وقامت بريطانيا إنشاء صندوق إستكشاف فلسطين عام (1865) الذي كان هدفه الأساس التأكيد على الرؤية التوراتية وأحقية اليهود في فلسطين.
وقد أولت الحكومة البريطانية إهتماماً كبيراً بصندوق إستكشاف فلسطين، ويلاحظ ذلك من خلال طاقم العمل الذي ضم الخبراء في مختلف المجالات الهندسية، والجغرافية، والأثرية، والعسكرية، ومن ضمن الذين عملوا مع هذا الصندوق الرحالة نعمان القساطلي.
وما قام به القساطلي ليس برحلة، وإنما كان من ضمن العمل في صندوق إستكشاف فلسطين، وكان يتقاضى راتباً جراء ذلك، بغض النظر عن أهداف هذا الصندوق، فقد قام القساطلي معلومات مهمة عن أوضاع فلسطين الإقتصادية، والإجتماعية، والدينية، والثقافية.
ومن هنا، تأتي أهمية هذه الدراسة، التي هي عبارة عن تحقيق مخطوط القساطلي (الرحلة النعمانية) التي عُثر على نسختها الوحيدة في المكتبة الظاهرية في دمشق، وقد عمق المحقق إلى دراستها وتحقيقها، وقد شملت الدراسة الحديث عن القساطلي من حيث حياته الشخصية ومؤلفاته، وثقافته، والأعمال التي تقلدها.
