السياحة وسيلة للإتصال الفكرى وتبادل الثقافة والعادات والتقاليد بين الشعوب وأداة لإيجاد مناخ مشع بروح التفاهم والتسامح بينها. ومن هنا تصبح السياحة أداة لإكتشاف وحدة الإنسانية. لكل ذلك أصبح من الضرورى وجود قواعد تحكم العلاقات التى تنشأ فى المجتمع نتيجة للأنشطة السياحية المتباينة. وهذا ما يعتنى به علم السياحة بفروعه المختلفة.
فقد أصبحت الحاجة ملحة للتعرف على مجموعة المعارف التى تتناول على سبيل المثال: مفهوم السياحة وأشكالها ومقوماتها ومحدداتها وأسواقها المحلية والإقليمية والدولية والإطار التنظيمى للأنشطة السياحية المختلفة... الخ (نظرية السياحة)- وأهداف التخطيط السياحى، والمسح الشامل للموارد السياحية واستخدامها وربط الخطة المحلية السياحية بالخطة القومية، وتخطيط الإستثمارات السياحية ورسائل تمويلها.... الخ (التخطيط السياحى)- والعلاقات العامة وصلتها بالسياحة ودور الصحافة فى المجال السياحى وتكوين رأى عام سياحى فى الخارج.. الخ (الإعلام السياحى)- والقوانين التى تحكم العمل السياحى والتشريعات المنظمة لعمل المنشآت السياحية وقواعد المنظمات الدولية المعنية بالسياحة...... الخ (تشريعات سياحية)- وإعداد البيانات والإحصاءات السياحية.
