يعطي الإمام محمد الغزالي في هذا الكتاب صورة صادقة عن سيرة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم حيث اجتهد في إبراز الحكم والتفاسير لما يقع من حوادث، ثم ترك للحقائق المجلوة أن تدع آثارها في النفوس دون افتعال أو احتيال. مستفيداً في كل ذلك من السير التي كتبها القدامى والمحدثون استفادة حسنة. حيث يميل المؤرخون إلى التعليل والموازنة وربط الحوادث المختلفة في سياق متماسك، والقدامى منهم يعتمدون على حشو الآثار وتمحيص الأسانيد، وتسجيل ما دقّ وجلّ من الوقائع الشؤون.
فخرج الإمام محمد الغزالي في كتابه هذا بين الطريقتين على نحو جديد، يجمع بين ما في كليتها من خير، فجعل من تفاصيل السيرة موضوعاً متماسكاً يشد أجزاءه روح واحد، ثم وزع النصوص والمرويات الأخرى بحيث تتسق مع وحدة الموضوع وتعين على اتقان صورته وإكمال حقيقيته. وقصد من وراء ذلك أن تكون السيرة شيئاً ينمي الإيمان، ويزكي الخلق، ويلهب الكفاح، ويغري باعتناق الحق والوفاء له، ويضم ثروة طائلة من الأمثلة الرائعة لهذا كله.
يعرض للسيرة النبوية الشريفة موضحاً كيف حمل الرسول (ص) لواء الرسالة وجهاده من أجل نشر الدعوة الإسلامية، وأسفاره ورحلاته وهجرته ونتائجها ومواقفه المختلفة مع قبيلة قريش وكيف اتسمت بالنبل، والأسس التى وضعها لبناء المجتمع الإسلامى، وأخيراً وفاته.
لقد بذلت وسعى في إعطاء القارئ صورة صادقة عن سيرة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم واجتهدت في إبراز الحكم والتفاسير لما يقع من حوادث، ثم تركت للحقائق المجلوة أن تدع آثارها في النفوس دون افتعال او احتيال فجعلت من تفاصيل السيرة موضوعات متمساكا يشد أجزاءه روح واحد، ثم وزعت النصوص والمرويات الخرى بحيث تتسق مع وحدة الموضوع وتعين على إتقان صورته وإكمال حقيقته.
