نظراً لما لدى البعض من خلفية عن الإسلاميين، سواء كانت صحيحة أم غير صحيحة، بدأت تتبادر إلى الأذهان مخاوف من طرح الإسلاميين ومن دخولهم معترك السياسة، وبخاصة بعد الثورة المصرية، وما نتج عنها من مساحات واسعة للحريات كان للإسلاميون محرومين منها من قبل، وهذا ما أعطاهم دافعا لخوض غمار العمل السياسي.
يستعرض الباحث عصام تليمة في كتابه أهم التساؤلات التي تطرح اليوم بينما يعتلي الإسلاميون سدة الحكم مع الربيع العربي وفي مصر خصوصا، ويهدف إلى تبيين موقف المدرسة الوسطية الإسلامية من عدة قضايا مثارة، وهي عن الدولة المدنية وموقف الإسلاميين منها ودور مشايخ الدين في الدولة، وأي إسلام سيعتمد في ظل مذاهب إسلامية متعددة. وعند الموقف من الحريات السياسية والأحزاب غير الإسلامية والحريات الفكرية، وعن تطبيق الشريعة ونقاش بعض الإشكاليات فيما يعتبر من الحدود وما هو من التعزير، وعن الموقف من غير المسلمين والأقليات في الدولة. ويطمح المؤلف من كتابه إلى خلق تيار فكري وسطي عام من هذه المسائل، وأن تكون مرجعا عند النقاش، وهو في آخر فصول الكتاب الخمسة يناقش الحالة الإسلامية بين الجمود والتطور والمراجعات في تاريخ الحركات الإسلامية.
