شغل المتنبي مساحة غير قليلة الأهمية في الدراسات الأدبية التي دارت في وقت مبكر حول شخصيته بما تنطوي عليه من غرائبه، وحول شعره الذي كنز الخلاف فيه، حتى جعله مدعاة للفخر.
والكثرة من الدراسات التي فهرسها المحققان كوركيس عوّاد وميخائيل عواد في مجلد ضخم، لا تمنع أن يلج عالم المتنبي باحث جديد يضيف صفحة،-أرجو أن تكون جديدة-في فهم شعر المتنبي، وليس الأمر بالسهل، لأنك أمام هذا الكم الهائل يجب أن نقول ما لم يقله غيرك، ولا خير في أن تكرر الآخرين.
لقد كان هذا الأمر ملازماً في دراستي للمتنبي، لذا تجدني اخترت ظاهرة تكاد أن تكون فلسفية معاصرة في مفهومها، لكنها ليست غريبة عن عصر المتنبي وخاصة الوعي بها، بل رقم فيها المفكرون من زمانه صفحات في تضاعيف كتبهم، وفي دراستي لهذه الظاهرة في شعر المتنبي لم يكن عملي اغتراب نفسي، وآخر زماني، وآخر مكاني، أو ديني، بل رصدت مظهر فنياً في قصيدة المتنبي في مستوى البناء لهيكل القصيدة وفي مستوى الموضوع، وهو رسم المثال الذي ظل يبحث عنه، فكان مرة نفسه وأخرى ممدوحة وهو في تحولاته بين النفس والممدوح يمثل صورة الاغتراب، وتلك الحال هي المثيرة لقلقه وتوتره الذي نجده لا يقف عند حدود الذات بإنسانيتها، بل ينسحب إلى النص الذي فيه من إثارات القلقة بحيث ازدحمت حوله الرؤى لتخلق هالة عاش شيئاً من ألقها.
