ليس هذا الكتاب معنياً بإحصاء وتسجيل ما يُسمى بسرقات الشعراء قدر عنايته بمد جسور بين شعر المتنبي والشعر العربي مستنيراً بهدي المناهج والدراسات النقدية؛ التاريخية والتناصية والأسلوبية.
وحسب المنهج الذي اختططناه أن نحدُد مظاهر شعر المتنبي ثم نتابع تلك المظاهر في شعر الشعراء الآخرين، وبتعبير آخر إنَّ هدف الكتاب يتجه إلى بيان ما تركته تلك المظاهر من بصمات في الشعر العربي، ودراسة كهذه لا تخلو من صعوبات، وقد أشار د. بلاشير في الصفحة 460 من كتابه الجليل (أبو الطيب المتنبي دراسة في التأريخ الأدبي) إلى الصعوبات التي تكتنف مثل هذا الموضوع، ومنها: إنَّ العديد من الشعراء المتأخرين لم تُطبع دواوينهم، وإنَّ تحديد إتجاهات الشعر العربي، بنوع خاص من الرواسم لا يُتيح لنا إلا قليلاً، تبين ما هو صادر عن الرصيد المشترك، وما يخصَّ المتنبي بالذات.
