يعد (تفسير المحيط الأعظم والبحر الخضم) لمؤلفه السيد "حيدر الآملي" كتاباً جامعاً للتأويل والتفسير في كتاب الله (القرآن الكريم) بحيث يكون التأويل كما جاء في خطبة الكتاب: مطابقاً لأرباب التوحيد وأهل الحقيقة غير خارج عن قاعدة أهل البيت عليهم السلام بحسب الظاهر ..." ويعني ذلك أن يكون التفسير جامعاً للشريعة والطريقة والحقيقة، لقول النبي (ص): "الشريعة أقوالي، والطريقة أفعالي، والحقيقة أحوالي". وعلى هذا الأساس شرع المؤلف في ترتيب كتابه بـ "التفسير بالتأويل والتأويل بالتفسير، ووشحته بمقدمات سبعة متقدمة على الكتاب، وهي مقدمات لا بدّ لهذا الكتاب منها بحيث لو خلى عنها لم يكن تاماً في طريقة ولا مشبعاً في فنِّه".
والمقدمات هي: المقدمة الأولى: في بيان التأويل والتفسير والفرق بينهما، المقدمة الثانية، في بيان كتاب الله الكبير الآفاقي وتطبيقه بكتاب الله القرآني الجمعي، المقدمة الثالثة، في بيان حروف الله الآفاقية وتطبيقها بحروف الله القرآنية، المقدمة الرابعة، في بيان كلمات الله الآفاقية، وتطبيقها بكلمات الله القرآنية، المقدمة الخامسة، في بيان آيات الله الآفاقية، وتطبيعها بآيات الله القرآنية، المقدمة السادسة، في بيان الشريعة والطريقة والحقيقة، وبيان أنها أسماء مترادفة صادقة على حقيقة واحدة باعتبارات مختلفة، المقدمة السابعة، في بيان التوحيد وأقسامه ومراتبه من التوحيد الفعلي والوصفي والذاتي ... وما اشتمل عليها من الأبحاث الدقيقة والأسرار الشريعة ..." وإذا تقرر هذا، وتحقق ترتيب الكتاب وعلة تصنيفه وتأليفه يعود المؤلف للتأكيد أن هذا الترتيب يحتاج إلى ثلاثة أشياء: الأول: إلى علة تقديم المقدمات ووجه انحصارها في السبع مقدمات. والثاني: إلى علّة تطبيق التأويل، والثالث: إلى علّة خصوصية التأويل بأهل التوحيد وأهل البيت دون غيرهم وبيان الأولوية في هذا التفسير لهم وبيان تفضيلهم في جميع ذلك على غيرهم "صورة ومعنى بحكم العقل والنقل".
