التفسير الكبير "البحر المحيط" مؤلف بلغت أجزاؤه الثمانية، وكأنها في مضمونها بلغت رقماً أكبر بكثير، فجاء هذا المضمون في التفسير والتدبر كالبحر المحيط الذي لا نهاية له ولا قرار. وقد رتب المصنف الإمام يوسف بن حيان الغرناطي الشهير بأبي حيان مؤلفه كالتالي: ابتدأ أولاً بالكلام على مفردات الآية التي يفسرها لفظة لفظة؛ فيما يحتاج إليه من اللغة والأحكام النحوية التي لتلك اللفظة قبل التركيب، وإذا كان للكلمة معنيان أو معان ذكر ذلك في أول موضع فيه تلك الكلمة لينظر ما يناسب لها من تلك المعاني في كل موضع تقع فيه فيحمل عليه، ثم يشرع في تفسير الآية ذاكراً سبب نزولها إذا كان لها سبب ونسخها ومناسبها وارتباطها بما قبلها، حاشداً فيها القرآن شاذها ومستعملها، ذاكراً توجيه ذلك في علم العربية، ناقلاً أقاويل السلف والخلف في فهم معانيها، متكلماً على جليّها وخفيّها، ومبدياً ما فيها من غوامض الإعراب ودقائق الآداب من بدعي وبيان، وإن عرض تكرار فيميز قائده ناقلاً أقاويل الفقهاء الأربعة وغيرهم في الأحكام الشرعية فيما فيه تعلق باللفظ القرآني، مجيلاً على الدلائل التي في كتب الفقه، وكذلك ما يذكره من القواعد النحوية يحيل في تقررها والاستدلال عليها على كتب النحو.
ثم يختتم الكلام في جملة من الآيات التي فسرها أفراداً وتركيباً بما ذكر وافيها من علم البيان والبديع، ملخصاً، ثم يتبع آخر الآيات بكلام منثور يشرح به مضمون تلك الآيات على ما اختاره من تلك المعاني ملخصاً جملها في أحسن تلخيص، وقد ينجر معها ذكر معان لم تتقدم في التفسير، ويورد بعضاً من كلام الصوفية مما فيه بعض مناسبة لمدلول اللفظ دون اللجوء إلى علم التأويل الذي لجؤوا إليه في تفسيرهم لآيات القرآن. إلى جانب هذا التفسير فقد ضم هذا المؤلف في هامشه تفسيران جليلان: أحدهما "النهر الماد" من البحر لأبي حيان أيضاً، وثانيهما كتاب "الدر اللقيط من البحر المحيط" للإمام بن مكتوم القيسي الحنفي.
