يعدّ كتاب "البحر المحيط" في تفسير القرآن الكريم لأبي حيان الأندلسي، عند أهل العلم المرجع الأول والأهم لمن يريد أن يقف على وجوه الإعراب لألفاظ القرآن الكريم. حيث لم يهمل مؤلف الكتاب، كما يقول صاحب التفسير والمفسرون-ما عدا هذا الجانب من النواحي التي لها اتصال بالتفسير. فهو يتكلم على المعاني اللغوية للمفردات ذاكراً أسباب النزول، والناسخ والمنسوخ، والقراءات مع توجيهها، وهو لا يفضل الناحية البلاغية في القرآن، ولا يهمل الأحكام الفقهية عندما يمر بآيات الأحكام. ذاكراً ما جاء عن السلف، ومن تقدمه من الخلف. كل هذا طريقة وضعها لنفسه، ومشى عليها في كتابه، مشيراً إلى ذلك في مقدمته، ولذلك فالكتاب لا يستغني عنه باحث، ولا ينبغي أن تخلو منه مكتبة عالم. فمؤلف الكتاب: هو واحد من كبار العلماء بالعربية والتفسير والحديث والتراجم واللغات.
