نروم في هذا الكتاب التعرّف على الكيفية التي تبلورت بها إشكالية التأليف في شأن السيرة النبوية في الخطاب الإستشراقي، وهي مهمة تقتضي البدء برصد الصورة التي تجذرت في الوعي الغربي عن نبي الإسلام، ولعل السبب الذي يحملنا على طرق باب هذا المبحث الشاسع هو ما لاحظناه من علاقة وطيدة بين تلك الصورة والنتائج التي انتهت إليها أعمال المستشرقين عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.
يأتي هذا الكتاب كمحاولة للسير في درب المقاربة المعرفية التفكيكية للخطاب الإستشراقي، وذلك من خلال تفكيك الصورة التي نحتها هذا الخطاب في المخيال الغربي عن نبي الإسلام، وقد تم ذلك من خلال مضارعة مقاربة المستشرقين بما تورده المصادر العربية الإسلامية.
هذا يمكن القول إذاً، إن هذا الكتاب، وبمقدار ما يوحي بأنه قراءة في مصادرنا عن السيرة النبوية، بمقدار ما إنه لا يقوم بذلك إلا من وراء حجاب تفكيك الخطاب الإستشراقي، فهو إذاً قراءة في هذا الخطاب أولاً، ومحاولة لنقد فهمه للمصادر الإسلامية والسعي إلى التعامل النقدي معها هي الأخرى ثانياً.
