يتناولُ هذا البحثُ مسألةً رئيسةً في فكر محمد أركون هي؛ مسألةُ التجديد المنهجي وعلاقته برهان التنوير في العالم الإسلامي.
وليس من قبيل الصدفة أن نربط بين ما بذله هذا البحاثة المقتدر من جهدٍ نظري في سبيل تجديد المنهج في مجال الدراسات التراثية والإسلامية عامةً، ورهان التنوير الذي ظل يُشكل الهمَّ المُرشد لمشروعه الفكري في مختلف مستوياته وأبعاده؛ إذ إن هوسَه براهِنه، وما خلَّفه في ذهنه من وعيٍ قلقٍ بمظاهر الأزمة الفكرية التي يتخبط فيها الوعي الإسلامي المعاصر، هو ما حمله على التنقيب عن جذورها التاريخية والفكرية، وعن جراثيمها التأسيسية التي طفقَ يبحثُ عنها في ثنايا العقل الإسلامي؛ منذ لحظته التأسيسية الكلاسيكية، وصولاً إلى أظْهَر تجلياته في العالم الإسلامي المعاصر.
وقد كان على أركون أن يُنفق وقتاً طويلاً في فهم آليات إشتغال هذا العقل والمنطق الحاكم له، بسبب شساعة المجالات النظرية الناظمة للثقافة الإسلامية من جهة، ويحكم رغبته في خلخلة بنيان هذا العقل من خلال التموقع في أكثر من زاوية والتحرك في أكثر من جبهة تاريخية ونقدية من جهةٍ ثانيةٍ.
فوجدناه، تبعاً لذلك، يتنقل بسلاسةٍ بين الفلسفة، وعلم الكلام، والتاريخ، والفقه والأدب، من دون أن يمس ذلك بصرامته المنهجية ولا بموقفه من التنوير الذي جعله غاية مشروعه الفكري وقصدَه الرئيس.
