يفيد هذا الكتاب في قراءة وتطبيق النص المسرحي، يهتم بالمسرح والدراما لجهة كونه مجال إستقصاء سيميائي محتمل فريد، الغرض الرئيسي من هذا الكتاب هو مراجعة العمل المسرحي وعملية إنتاجية، ومن ثمة إقتراح توجهات مستقبلية لبحث محتمل في مثل هذا الحقل الثقافي الحيوي.
يحتوي الكتاب على سرد مفصل للتقنيات في "المسرح" و"الدراما"، و"العرض"، و"اللغة" وكل ما يختص بالتمثيل المسرحي إعتماداً على أهم منظري المسرح ورواده.
ويبحث الكتاب كما ورد في (المقدمة): "في ما لو كان للنص الدرامي صلة منطقية بسيمياء المسرح الخاصة، وتظهر للعيان، آنذاك، مسألة ما إذا كان من الممكن إعتبار سيمياء المسرح والدراما (سواء كانت ثنائية أو متعددة الجوانب) مشروعاً واحداً متكاملاً أو، عوضاً عن ذلك، ما إذا كان هنالك بالضرورة فرعاً دراسة (أو أكثر) منفصلين تماماً...
وفي سياق البحث يطرح المؤلف المسألة بشكل آخر يقول فيه "هل يمكننا أن نعيد كتابة فن الشعر الآرسطي النوع في لغة سيميائية تعنى بجميع المبادئ الإتصالية والتمثيلية والمنطقية والتخيلية واللسانية والبنيوية في المسرح والدراما؟... إنه واحد من بين الأسئلة الأساسية التي حثنا على إنجاز هذا الكتاب".
وبكلام آخر الكتاب يعكس بعض التغييرات التي عرفتها سيمياء المسرح في سياق تطورها.
