المسرح العربي اليوم، كما كل الإبداع الفني والأدبي، على مفترق: بين "حداثة" تتمسك أيضاً بحرية الخلق وحرية الموقف، غير موظفة في تجميل النظام السائد أي شكل اتخذ، وبين "ما بعد الحداثة" التي لا تشجع إلا على حرية الأنانية الفردية، موظفة في تجميل النظام السائد، أو في الأقل لا تتعارض معه.
المسرح العربي اليوم، كما كل النتاج الفني والأدبي، على مفترق: بين الاستسلام لإيديولوجية. أحادية البعد، برغم مظهر التعددية، وبين التمرد على هذه الإيديولوجية، بين التقولب مع شروط "اقتصاد السوق" والتحول بالإنسان ووظيفة الفنان إلى سلعة، وبين مواصلة حلم إنساني بدأ مع طفولة الحضارة، ولا يرضى بأقل من سعادة فردية مطلقة في إطار سعادة جماعية مطلقة.
ومن الطبيعي أن تكون مجتمعات العالم الثالث، المحاصرة بالبؤس والاستقلال والتخلف، هي اليوم الأقدر على تداول آخر لغة إنسانية للالتفاف على "نهاية التاريخ"، وفتح ثغرة فيه لبداية جديدة تستعيد في أفقها كل التضحيات السابقة التي منيت بالفشل.
ولا سبيل لذلك أي الإبقاء على الذاكرة الإنسانية حية.
في هذا الكتاب، الذي ينطلق من تجربة شخصية، تسجيل بعض العلامات في مسيرة الفن الأكثر حساسية للمتغيرات الاجتماعية فن المسرح.
