تمثل هذه المحاضرة حواراً حول الحاجة إلى أن تدرك الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية الاتجاهات السياسية والاجتماعية والأيديولوجية التي نشأت في العالم الإسلامي في السنوات الأخيرة، وحول ضرورة إشراك المجتمعات المسلمة في جميع أنحاء العالم. وقد بدأت إدارة أوباما تتحرك في هذا الاتجاه، كما يتضح من خطاب أوباما في القاهرة في 4 حزيران/يونيو 2009، ومن تصريحاته ولقاءاته الصحفية الأخرى فيما يتعلق بالعالم الإسلامي. يستقي هذا العرض معلوماته من بحوث المحاضر الأكاديمية، ومن عمله لدى الحكومة الأمريكية خلال المدة 1990-2006، وعلى زيارات عديدة قام بها لأكثر من ثلاثين دولة إسلامية من دول جنوب الصحراء في إفريقيا ومنطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا وآسيا الوسطى وجنوب آسيا وجنوبي شرق آسيا والبلقان، إضافة إلى عدة دول أوربية فيها رعايا مسلمة. وقد ناقش المحاضر الموضوعات الرئيسية التالية: الوضع الراهن للإسلام السياسي وانعكاساته، والتطرف والإرهاب العالميان، والدور المتغير للأحزاب السياسية الإسلامية والحوارات الدائرة بين المفكرين المسلمين، ورد الفعل الأمريكي على هذه الظاهرة، وطرق محددة لمشاركة العالم الإسلامي.أبرزها: تعيين سفير لدى منظمة المؤتمر الإسلامي. والحوار مع الأحزاب السياسية الإسلامية السائدة. ومأسسة الالتزام الأمريكي بالديمقراطية والإدارة الحكومية الجيدة.ووضع برنامج تبادل بين البرلمانيين.وتوسعة برامج تبادل الطلاب وهيئات التدريس والمهنيين. وتشجيع الجامعات الأمريكية على بناء فروع لها في الدول الإسلامية. ومشاركة الجاليات المسلمة المحلية في إشراك العالم الإسلامي.
