كانت الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية تهتم بالمنطقة العربية حتى فترة سبعينيات القرن الماضي تقريباً، ولكن كان هذا الاهتمام محدوداً، ومحكوماً بالنظرة العامة إلى الصراع الدولي بين القطبين الأمريكي والسوفيتي خلال الحرب الباردة، ثم سرعان ما تطور الاهتمام الأمريكي بالمنطقة بمرور الوقت بحيث باتت تحتل مركز الصدارة من اهتماماتها الدولية. وتأسيساً على ذلك، فقد أصبحت أوضاع الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية العامة والداخلية تؤثر وتتأثر بصورة مباشرة بالعلاقات العربية-الأمريكية. من خصائص النظام الدولي أن الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية كانت ولاتزال قوة عظمى في العالم، وأن العلاقات العربية-الأمريكية استقرت ولأمد طويل على أجندة كان أبرز محاورها النفط العربي والصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي والمواقف تجاه التحديات الدولية؛ أي تلك التحديات التي كانت تواجه الأمريكيين، مثل التحدي السوفيتي أو تواجه العرب مثل التحدي الإسرائيلي، أو تواجه الاثنين معاً. والعلاقات العربية-الأمريكية لم تسر في خط مستقيم ولم تتطور باتجاه واحد قط، بل راوحت بين التحسن والتردي بحسب الظروف العامة التي حكمتها.
