اتخذت العلاقات بين الولايات المتحدة وإيران طابعاً عدائياً لما يزيد على عقدين من الزمن، إلا أن هناك حالياً بوادر انفراج. ما هي احتمالات تسوية النزاعات بين الدولتين؟ رغم أن واشنطن وطهران ستقومان، على الأرجح، بتحسين العلاقات بينهما، إلا أن هناك عوائق هيكلية قد تحول دون عودة الود والصداقة بين الدولتين خلال فترة وجيزة. وقد أظهر تحليل لأسباب انهيار العلاقات بين الولايات المتحدة ومجموعة من الدول الثورية في العالم الثالث (بما فيها إيران)، أن تلك الدول الثورية قد بدأت الصدامات مع الولايات المتحدة لأسباب داخلية في معظمها، كما قامت الولايات المتحدة بترسيخ أسس تلك الخصومة لأن السياسات الخارجية لتلك الدول الثورية كانت تتحدى مصالح واشنطن خلال مرحلة الحرب الباردة. وفيما يتعلق بالتقارب الحالي بين طهران وواشنطن، فإن السياسة الداخلية لإيران ما تزال تمنعها من السعي وراء إنشاء روابط ودية مع الولايات المتحدة، كما أن الولايات المتحدة، بدورها، لا تزال عاجزة عن تغيير موقفها بسبب سياستها المتصلبة في الخليج الهادفة إلى الاحتواء. إن هذا البحث يقوم بتقصي تلك العوائق الهيكلية، مع التركيز على إيران كدولة ثورية، وعلى الولايات المتحدة كقوة عظمى وحيدة. بالنسبة إلى إيران، فإن هذا التقارب سوف يتحدى مؤسسات النظام التي يسيطر عليها رجال الدين. أما بالنسبة إلى الولايات المتحدة، فإن التقارب سيتطلب من واشنطن أن تتقبل وجود المزيد من القيود على نفوذها في الشرق الأوسط.
