"مع الوقت، نسى الناس حكاية الرجل الذي طار مع العصافير، وتحول إلى ظل سقط في النهر، ثم خرج من المياه واختفى بداخل الشجرة الكبيرة. ظلوا يحكون عن تلك المرأة التي كانت تأتي في شم النسيم من كل عام مرتدية السواد، تطعم الناس والأسماك، وتنثر التراب على جذوع الأشجار وترويه بدموعها، لكن لا أحد يتذكر أين ذهبت. البعض قال إنه رأى البلدوزر الكبير يسحقها ويسوي جسدها بالأرض، والبعض الآخر أكد أن الحراس المسلحين ألقوا بها في النيل، بينما أكد آخرون أنها قفزت إلى المياه بمحض إرادتها. امرأة واحدة فقط أقسمت أنها سمعت رعدًا في عز الصيف، ورأت بعينيها اللتين سيأكلهما الدود، برقا هز الجزيرة وارتفعت مياه النيل حتى فاضت على الأرض. رأت الشجرة تهتز بشدة، تفتح لحاءها ليخرج من ساقها الضخمة نور يكاد يعمي العيون. فتحت المرأة المرتدية السواد ذراعيها ونظرت إلى النيل طويلًا، لكن الشجرة الكبيرة ابتلعتها".
البشر من المناطق الشعبية في القاهرة مثل الوايلي الكبير وبولاق أو العلا هم أبطال هذا العمل. هؤلاء البشر تمتد أصول بعضهم إلى قرى مهمشة في ريف مصر. يعملون في مناطق مختلفة بحكم وظائفهم، مثل الزمالك. يمتهنون مهنًا مختلفة، فبينهم السائق والنادل والصياد والتلميذ والموظفة والجزار والعامل والعاملة والخادمة والتاجر، وبينهم أيضًا النشال والعاطل والبلطجي والمتحرش والمغتصب.
