كلنا نعرف تشيخوف.. قرأناه بلغته الأصلية، أو بلغات أخرى عبر ترجمات متعددة، منها العربية أيضًا. وتفنن المترجمون العرب في طرح أعمال تشيخوف بين الحين والآخر، لدرجة أننا قد نجد أن كل جيل قام بترجمة تشيخوف مرتين أو ثالث. كل ذلك أمر مهم وصحي، ويعكس مدى الاهتمام بالكاتب الروسي. في هذا الكتاب، فضَّلتُ طرح تشيخوف من زاوية أخرى نسبيًا، أي التعامل مع تشيخوف كمفكر ودراماتورج. وليس مصادفة أن أقدم قصته "كمان روتشيلد" التي عادة لا يقترب إليها المترجمون. لا أدري لماذا؟! هذه القصة التي شغلت الرأي العام الأدبي والسياسي لفترات طويلة على تخوم القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين. وكُتِبت عليها مقالات ودراسات يصل حجمها إلى حجم الأعمالل الكاملة لتشيخوف نفسه. تشيخوف الدراماتورج يجد هنا أيضًا مساحة جيدة يتركز فيها الضوء عليه باعتباره صاحب تيار جمالي - فلسفي في الكتابة الدرامية. وليس عبثًا أن تتشكل في العديد من الدول الأوروبية دوائر "التشيخوفيين" الذين يواصلون التقاليد التشيخوفية في المسرح، ويعملون على تطويرها وطرحها في أعمال مسرحية متنوعة وفقًا لتطور الأفكار والأدوات والإمكانيات.
