الصحافي عيسى يعيش فراغاً كبيراً في حياته، تسبّبت به أزمات نابعة من قلب الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية، واستمرّت معه بعد انتهاء الحرب. في ثلاثينياته، بلا زواج، ولا أهل أو أقارب أو حتى أصدقاء، يجد نفسه في عزلة عن محيطه، في الحيّ والعمل، فلا نشاطات له أو رغبة في التغيير. وبينما هو في أشدّ لحظات عزلته المعتادة، متخذاً ملاذاً سريّاً له، في صنوبرة عملاقة بالقرب من منزله، يقابل سارا، المليئة بالأسرار بدورها، لكنّه لا يسألها عن شيء من ذلك، ويعيش قصة حبّ غريبة عن كلّ ما يحتمل أن يكون. اختفاء سارا المفاجئ يجعله في رحلة بحث أكثر غرابة، تشترك فيها شخصيات أخرى، لعلّ عيسى ورّطها معه في أزمنة مختلفة. لا ينتهي البحث عند يقين كلّي، خصوصاً عندما يسلّم المهمة إلى شخص آخر كتب في مفكرته عنه وعن تجارب الاعتقال والموت والنجاة معه. وبينما أغدق عيسى عليه صفات مختلفة، ربما كانت ترسم خياراً مختلفاً عن البحث، عبر زوجة وطفلة وعمل وراحة بال، وتدعوه إلى النجاة بعيداً عن لعنة انتظار لا تنتهي، امتزج الباحث الأخير بعيسى وبتشخيص عيسى له وبشخصيات أخرى، لتصبح مهمته التي لا فكاك منها العثور على عيسى قبل العثور على سارا. فما مصيرهما ومصيره وماذا حلّ بتلك الصنوبرة؟
