في عمله هذا يسوح محيي الدين اللاذقاني مع قارئه في مدن العشق والأسطورة، فيغرينا بالرحلة الروحية قبل الإبحار بالجسد، فالمدن عمل صفات النساء وتقبل كل أفعال الحب والكره والإهمال والهجران والمغازلة فهناك مدينة تحبها لأول نظرة وأخرى تقرر مقاطعتها وعدم العبور فوقها، وثالثة تحب أن تناددمها وتمشط جدائلها الممتدة إلى البحر وتداعب أناملها المستحمة بدفء على رمال الشاطئ. فللمدن أرواح كالبشر حيث تجد مدينة سمجة الروح وأخرى سمحة وثالثة ضروب لعوب غنوج كمراهقة فاتنة.
ومن خيارات اللاذقاني لمدنه ذات الخصوصية الرومانسية والأسطورية يتكشف منهجه في هذا العمل الذي يجدد روحانية الرحالة الكبار فنراه يقف على جسر التنهدات في البندقية ويحاور ليالي الأنس في فيينا بعد اسمهان ثم يحكي لنا عن أنس آخر في هافانا حيث يتلاقى كاسترو وغيفارا مع أرنست همنغواي وخوسيه مارتي في مدينة تنازع مدناً اخرى على تراث كولومبس ورفاقه. ولكتاب "نورس بلا بوصلة" جاذبية تكمن بمدنه المعجونة بالتاريخ والعابقة بالرومانسية والأساطير أما الفتنة الحقيقة في العمل فتأتي من الأسلوب الرشيق الأنيق الذي اشتهر به اللاذقاني فاثناء حديثه عن رودتس جزيرة الفرسان والقراصنة يفاجئ اللاذقاني القارئ منذ السطور الأولى بقوله: (الحب ابن حرام، هكذا أصله في أساطير الأغريق فكيوبيد ثمرة شهوة محرمة نتجت عن لقاء مارس بفينوس زوجة شقيقه الحداد) وبعد هذا التبسيط الأنيق لمحرك أساطير الحب الإغريقية يذكر المؤلف أن فينوس لها أسماء وصفات عديدة فهي ايضاً أفروديت المستحمة التي ولدت على رمال قبرص لكن رودس احتفظت في متحفها بأجمل تماثيلها.
هكذا يرى اللاذقاني مدنه ونوارسه: "من خلال قصص الحب وأشعاره أكثر مما أجدها في وثائق الحروب والكراهية، فالسفرك كالضياء فعل محبة يشرق داخل النفس لينير الزوايا المعتمة، وبذا تتلاقى وتتلاقح في لحظة ما في مكان ما مشاهد البصر مع تجليات البصيرة...".
