لسنوات عدة هجر تشيكوف المسرح بإستثناء بعض أعمال المونولوج والمسرحيات الهزلية الصغيرة، حتى يناير (كانون الثاني) 1894 عندما أعلن أنه بدأ بكتابة مسرحية، ليعود وينفي ذلك في السنة التالية في رسالة إلى ف.ف. بيليبين: "أنا لا أقوم بكتابة مسرحية، وليس لدي ميل لكتابة أي شيء، أصبحت مسنّاً وفقدت حماستي المتوقدة، أرغب بكتابة رواية بطول مائة ميل" (18 يناير 1895).
بعد ذلك بتسعة أشهر أرسل خبراً مفاجئاً لسوفورين: "هل تصدق؟ أنا أكتب عملاً مسرحياً، وعلى الأرجح فلن أنهيه قبل نهاية نوفمبر، أكتبه دون سعادة رغم أني مستاء جداً من تقاليد المسرح، هو عمل كوميدي، فيه ثلاث شخصيات لنساء وستّ شخصيات لرجال، من أربعة فصول، وفيه منظر طبيعي (منظر بحيرة)، والكثير من الحوارات عن الأدب، والقليل من الأحداث، وخمسة أطنان من الحب" (21 أكتوبر 1895).
العمل الكوميدي كان "النورس" الذي نال إفتتاحاً مدوّياً في مسرح ألكسندرا في سان بطرسبرغ عام 1896.
