في عمله هذا يعود محيي الدين اللاذقاني إلى العصور الزاهية للثقافة العربية ليبحث عن الآباء الحقيقين للحداثة العربية، فيختار منهم ثلاثة، وفي طليعتهم عمرو بن بحر الجاحظ مع الحسين بن منصور الحلاج وأبي حيان التوحيدي. فيرى فيهم الإبداع الحقيقي لهم "فضل كتابة النص النضر الذي يحمل، رغم إيقاله في القدم، معظم مقومات الحداثة، ويخترق حجاب السنين، ليصل إلينا بكامل نضارته، وبحضوره ومراميه، وحمولته المثقلة بالرموز والمعاني...".
وعلى هذا وجد اللاذقاني، أن هؤلاء الرموز كانوا آباء الحداثة العربية، وأن المثقف أو المبدع العربي الذي نهل الحداثة غالباً من مصادر غريبة لم يكلف نفسه عناء البحث عما في تراثه من مساهمان فكرية وإبداعية، هي بمقاييس ذلك الزمان حداثية... وهذا يتطلب الكف عن وضع الحداثة في مواجهة "القدامة" ولا اعتبارها، أي الحداثة، مجرد أحداث تعاصرنا أو تجري في زمننا في مواجهة أحداث أو أفكار نشأت في الماضي، سواء كان قريباً أو بعيداً، لأن نصاً تراثياً، أو سيرة حياة مفكر عاش في العصر الأموي أو العباسي، قد تكون أكثر حداثة ونضجاً ومعاصرة من نصوص تكتب اليوم وقد تكتب بالمستقبل، الحداثة، حسب اللاذقاني، هي "قوة صاهرة تجمع خلاصات الجذر مع تجارب العصر"، وبهذا المعنى فإن تراثنا العربي، كما تمثل في رموز من نوع الجاحظ والحلاج والتوحيدي، "يملك قابلية التحول إلى طاقة حيوية دافعة" تعطي قوة للتيارات الفكرية والإبداعية المعاصرة، ولكي يتم ذلك فإن ما ينقصنا هو إعادة تقديم ذلك بأسلوب معاصر. وهذا ما نجح في تقديمه مؤلف هذا الكتاب...
