على بعد ميل من الشاطئ لامس قارب الصيد الماء، وانتشرت في الهواء مثل البرق الدعوة لإفطار السرب إلى أن جاء حشد من ألف نورس ليناور وليقاتل من أجل فتات الطعام. كانت بداية أخرى ليوم محموم.
أما النورس جوناثان ليفينغستون فقد كان يتمرن، مختلياً بعيد من القارب والشاطئ ومن مسافة مائة قدم في السماء دلّى قدميه المجففتين، رفع منقاره، واعتصر نفسه ليكبح التواء قوسية قاسية ومؤلمة عبر جناحيه. كانت الالتواء تعني أنه سيكون باستطاعته أن يطير بطيئاً، وهاهو الآن يبطئ لدرجة أن الريح صارت تهمس في وجهه، بينما يكمن المحيط ثابتاً تحته.
ضيق النورس عينيه بتركيز شديد، كبت أنفاسه، أجبر نفسه على تقوس... آخر... واحد... بوصة واحدة... وهنا إنتفش ريشه، تجمدت أوصاله ثم هوى.
إن النوارس، كما تعلمون، لا تتهاوى أبداً، لا تسقط أبداً. السقوط من الهواء يعني بالنسبة لها العار ويعني الخزي. غير أن النورس جوناثان ليفينغستون، وبدون أن يشعر بالعار، بسط جناحيه ثانية، مكرراً تلك الالتواء القاسية، مبطئاً، مبطئاً، ليهوى مرة أخرى-إنه لم يكن طائراً عادياً.
