إن ما بلغنا عن حياة محمد قبل البعثة قليلٌ جداً، وإذا كانت المصادر الإسلامية قدّمت إلينا مادة تاريخية تستحق التنويه وفصّلت جوانب مهمّة من السيرة النبوية، لكنها مع تفصيلها وتدقيقها سكتت واختصرت وتناقضت أحياناً كثيرة.
فكُتُب السيرة يلتبس فيها التاريخ بالبشارة بالأخبار بالأسطورة إلتباساً شديداً، وقد عالجنا هذا الإلتباس والخلط بالتمييز بين هذه العناصر المختلفة، فدّققنا النظر في الوقائع والأحداث التاريخية، ودرسنا ما روته كتب السيرة وإثبات النبوّة في التبشير بمحمد، وميّزنا البشارة من الأخبار، وبيّنا عدم فائدتها في الإحتجاج للنبوّة، وحلّلنا الأساطير التي رسمت صورة محمد، وعنينا بها الأخبار الخيالية التي وُضعت في تقديس الأحداث التاريخية الواقعية.
إن هذا الكتاب أبعد ما يكون من الخفّة أو السخرية، وليس في مراميه أبداً زعزعة الثوابت، لكن الاخبار التي جُمعت في كُتب السيرة منها الصحيح ومنها الموضوع ومنها المؤسطر، ورأينا أنه لا بد من نقدها لتمييزها مع أن الناس يجزعون أكثر ما يجزعون من مفارقة الأخبار التي اعتقدوا صحّتها من غير فحص، وألفوها من غير تفكّر، وتعبّدوا بها، فإذا ظهر خللها وكشف العقل زللها، فلا فائدة في التمسّك بها والدفاع عن الهوية لا يكون بالجمود على الأخبار المختلفة وتديّناً بالأساطير.
