هكذا تنتهي الرواية التي تمثل جدلاً بين الوعي والإحساس فالبطل ليس نابوليوناً، ليس راسكولينوف بالطبع، وهو يهزأ بثوريي القرن التاسع عشر الذين يحرّمون على أنفسهم الكحول والنساء وحتى التبغ انه ليس ناسكا، بل يعتبر نفسه رياضياً متزلجاً على الهملايا، طيّار مسافات طويلة مثل لندبرج. وهو لا يعمل وحيداً. انه داخل جماعة. والجماعة داخل منظمة. هو محترف تماماً، لكنه سيكون "حراً" بعد انتهاء مهمته، وقد يعود سائحاً إلى ساحة القتل (ربما مع زوجة وطفل)... رواية تحمل تساؤلات يصعب حصرها في نسق معين أو سياق، أهي حقاً "الجريمة والعقاب" في ضوء مختلف وظروف مغايرة؟.
