هنري فالنتاين ميلر (1891- 1980)، روائي ورسام أمريكي، نشأ في نيويورك، وعاش شبابه في باريس، منها سنوات برفقة صديقته الروائية أنايس نيَن بشكل بوهيمي حتى إندلاع الحرب العالمية الثانية، حيث تُعتبر سنوات إقامته في باريس الأخصب بالنسبة لإبداعاته الأدبية، عاد بعدها إلى الولايات المتحدة، وعاش ما تبقى من حياته فيها. عُرف عنه كسر القوالب الأدبية التقليدية، وطوّر نوعاً جديداً من الرواية دمج فيه السيرة الذاتية والنقد الإجتماعي، الذي تنعكس فيه الفلسفة والعلاقات السريالية الحرة مع الروحانيات التي تعبّر عن الحياة الحقيقية؛ من أشهر أعماله؛ ثلاثية الصلب الوردي، مدار السرطان، مدار الجدي، ربيع أسود. لا شك في أن هنري ميلر فنان عظيم، فنان أمريكي عظيم، وربما كان آخر فنان نستطيع أن نفتخر به، ولا أشك في أنه آخر أدبائنا العمالقة الذين صعدوا أثناء تلك الفترة المدهشة الممتدة بين 1890 إلى الأربعينيات من القرن العشرين. إن "الصلب الوردي" والتي تُكرر أجزاء كبيرة من مؤلفاته الأولى، هي عمل فني أفضل بكثير، مما فعله هنري ميلر هو أنه تناول السنوات الجوهرية للحياة في أمريكا حين كان يتعلم في البداية كيف يكتب، وعلاقة الحب الجوهرية في حياته، وفحصهما بدقة، ولكن من وجهة نظر لاحقة أكثر نضجاً بكثير، فكانت النتيجة سرداً ساحراً بصورة لا تُصدّق... عملاً ملحمياً بالمعنى الشخصي والإجتماعي والجمالي.
