يروي الكاتب الأميركى الشهير هنري ميلر قصته الأخيرة مع التسول، التي شكلت منعطفا في حياته البوهيمية بقوله، كنت في باريس أجوب شوارعها، حينما مر بي رجل يرتدي هنداما ينم عن توجهه إلى الأوبرا، وحينما أصبحت قبالته رجوته أن يمنحني بعض المال حينها دفعني الرجل من أمامه بغلظة وتابع سيره دون أن يتفوه بكلمة.
ثم حينما أصبح ورائي أخرج من جيوبه بعض القطع المعدنية ورماها باتجاهي على الوحل حينها شعرت بانحطاطي ومذلتي ومهانتي، لكنني انحنيت على الأرض ولملمت بيدي النقود وأنا أزيل عنها الطين. في تلك اللحظة عاهدت نفسي ألا أتسول بعد الآن وذلك ما فعلت.
