"كان صباح يوم سبت حينئذ، ولطالما كان يوم السبت بالنسبة إليّ أفضل يوم في الأسبوع. فأنا أعود إلى الحياة بعد أن يسقط الآخرون منهكين من فرط التعب، أول يوم لي يصادف يوم عطلة اليهود. وطبعاً لم تكن لدى أدنى فكرة عن أن ذلك الأسبوع سيكون الأسبوع الأجلّ في حياتي، وأنه سيدوم سبع سنوات كاملة. كل ما عرفته هو أن ذلك اليوم كان ميموناً وزاخراً بالأحداث. إن القيام بالخطوة القاتلة والتخلي عن كل شيء، بحد ذاته انعتاق: لم يخطر ببالي قط أن أفكر في العواقب. كان الاستسلام المطلق وغير المشروط للمرأة التي أحب يعني أن أتحرر من كل قيد ما عدا الرغبة في فقدانها، وهذا أسوأ القيود قاطبة".
يبدأ الأدب الأميركي وينتهي مع ما أنجزه هنري ميللر وروايته "سكسوس" هي الأولى من ثلاثيته "الصلب الوردي" والتي أساسها سيرة حياته الخاصة. وتمثل في مضمونها مصارعة طويلة بين الجسد والشيطان والملاك.
