"حاولت أن أستحضر فكرة ممتعة. حاولت أن أفكر في أميركا بوصفها مكاناً سمحت عنه فقط أفتح باسم يهوه العظيم والكونفوس القارىء وفتح كأنه باب سرداب خفي. وها هي: أميركا: جنة الألهة ونهر غراندكانيون في أريزونا... أنه يوم بعد غد وأنا واقف عند أعلى مقدمة السفينة "س.س. يدفورد" ...أقصد "إيل دوفرانس". لقد نسيت أنا لست مبعداً، بل أقضي فترة عطلة في الخارج، للوهلة الأولى حسبت أني تلك الفوضوية المحبوبة، إيماغولدمن، التي يقال أنها لدى اقترابها من أرض المنفى قالت: أنني أشتاق إلى الأرض (أميركا) التي جعلتني أعاني. ألم أعرف أيضاً الحب والفرح هناك؟ هي أيضاً قدمت بحثاً عن الحرية كالعديد غيرها. ألم تفتح أبوابها. أرض الحرية المباركة هذه للجميع كي يفرحوا؟ بإستثناء طبعاً الهنود الحمر، والسود، وأصحاب البطون الصفراء (الآسيويين). بهذه الروح جاء جدي وجدتي. رحلة العودة الطويلة إلى الوطن. السفن المبحرة تسعون إلى مئة يوم في البر مع أمراض الزهايمر... واليرقان، والملاريا، والهدير الصاخب، ومباهج المسافرين عبر المحيط. لقد وجدوا الحياة طيبة هنا في أميركا، أقصد أسلافي، على الرغم من أنهم في خضم كفاحهم للحفاظ على الجسد والروح معاً أنهاروا قبل الآوان... وقد نجونا نحن من... قريباً."
