بعد مرور ثلاث سنوات على نشر «اللون أرجواني» التي حازت جائزة بوليتزر وجائزة الكتاب الوطني، تحوّلت الرواية إلى فيلم سينمائي من إخراج ستيفن سبيلبرغ وحصد الفيلم شهرة دولية واسعة. وبعد مرور خمس سنوات على نشرها بيع ما يزيد عن ستة ملايين نسخة منها حول العالم. بعدها بعشر سنوات، تضاعف هذا الرقم، وأصبحت من بين أكثر خمسة كتب أعيدت قراءتها في أميركا. في العام 2005 أمست «اللون أرجواني» مسرحية موسيقية ناجحة على نحو استثنائي على مسرح برودواي، وكان المسرح يحتشد بالجمهور كل ليلة على مدار ما يزيد عن سنة.
آليس ووكر(1944)، من أبرز الأصوات الأدبية في الولايات المتحدة، عدا عن كونها ناشطة حقوقية ونسوية ومناهضة للعنصرية ومناصرة للقضية الفلسطينية، شاركت في حركة الحقوق المدنية في ستينيات القرن الماضي، وغير ذلك من حركات، وعُرفت بمناهضتها الحرب على العراق. بدأت مسيرتها الأدبية شاعرة وصدرت عام 1968 مجموعتها الشعرية الأولى «ذات مرة»، بينما صدرت روايتها الأولى «حياة غرانج كوبلاند الثالثة» عام 1970. لها أكثر من ثلاث عشرة رواية ومجموعة قصصية، وتسع مجموعات شعرية، وغيرها من الكتب الفكرية والسياسية، وبرواية «اللون أرجواني» الساحرة تقدّم دار المدى أدب ووكر للمرة الأولى باللغة العربية.
