في أقصى جنوب الولايات المتّحدة، في فترة ما بين الحربين العالميّتين الأولى والثانية، تتحدّث الرواية عن سيلي المرأة السوداء، الّتي ولدت في عمق الفقر والإستغلال، والّتي اغتصبت من قبل رجلٍ كانت تدعوه "بابا"، وحملت سفاحاً مرتين، ثمّ أخذ أطفالها منها، وإبعدت عنها، لمدّة عشرين عاماً، أختها الّتي كانت قطعةً من روحها، ثمّ تمّ ترويجها لرجل يمقتها ويقوم بإغتصابها كلّ يوم ويهينها هو وأبناؤه؛ وتتحدّث أيضاً عن علاقتها المثليّة مع عشيقة زوجها، ثمّ عن تمرّدها وحصولها على ما تريد.
اللون الأرجوانيّ رواية رمزيّة تختزل كلّ معاناة قد يعانيها بنو البشر؛ إنّها رواية تستحق القراءة أكثر من مرّة.
