يعتبر هذا الاختبار من أكثر الاختبارات شيوعاً (بعد اختبار رورشاخ Rorschach) في الإستخدامات الكلينيكية في علم النفس العيادي ولدراسة الشخصية.
ولكن لما كان تخصيص كتاب لهذا الاختبار ولهذه الطريقة التحليلية التي وضعها العالم "موراي"؟
في العيادات النفسية، يرتكز فيه التشخيص النفسي على مجموعة من الأدوات التي يستعملها الاخصائي النفسي لهدف التشخيص الدقيق ثم إختيار العلاج المناسب.
وهذه الأدوات التي تستعمل في التشخيص، تختلف وظيفتها، فمنها ما يرتكز على المقاربات التحليلية وأخرى دراسات القدرات العقلية أوالمعرفية. وطبعاً تأتي الاختبارات الإسقاطية لكشف الشخصية والحياة الهوامية واللاشعورية للمفحوص وإبراز الإنتاج الإسقاطي وطبيعة العلاقة بين المفحوص بمحيطه العائلي والعلائقي.
إذاً الاختبارات الإسقاطية هي أداة مهمة يستعملها الأخصائي النفسي:
لكشف الجوانب المختلفة (الخفية) من الشخصية.
لتشخيص الحالات المرضية للفرد والسوية أيضاً.
لمعرفة ما هي المشاكل الواعية منها واللاواعية التي يعاني منها المفحوص ومساعدته لحلها.
لإستخراج الميكانزمات الدفاعية .
خلاصة، أهمية هذا الكتاب تأتي تفسيراً للطلاب الذين يتخصصون بعلم النفس أو للأطباء الذين يتخصصون بالطب النفسي. هذا الاختبار هو وسيلة من الوسائل النفسية لدراسة الشخصية، ولكشف خبايا شخصية الصبور الذي يطلب المساعدة من أهل الإختصاص النفسي.
