حمدي شاب ريفي، يقصد القاهرة أوائل التسعينيات بحثاً عن... كل شيء. ورغم أنه يعتبر نفسه كاتباً، فلا بدّ أن يبدأ كـ"نفر"، يرفع "شيكارات" الرمل في ورش البناء. لم يفهم وصف هذا العمل الشاق بـ"الفاعل" إلا حين اشتغل به.
يستمرّ في نشر قصصه القصيرة في الصحف، فبين عشيرته البدوية هو "المثقّف الواصل". كل هذا سينتهي، يقول في نفسه. غير أن الأمور لا تلبث أن تلتبس بالفقر والدِّين والكبت والطبقيّة. لم يعد حمدي متأكداً... أيّهما المؤقّت؟ عمله الحقير أم أحلامه؟ أمكافح هو أم حثالة؟
"الدكتور"، بوّاب عمارة المُمثّلة، يعرّفه على "بدروم" الملذّات الأولى. و"الإخوة"، الذين يأبون إلا أن يُفصل في رحلات المعهد بين الطلاب والطالبات، يجرفونه في تظاهرتهم وسجنهم.
رواية تتجاوز البوح، والسيرة الذاتية، إلى لوحة لقعر مصر أواخر القرن العشرين، يمتزج فيها المضحك بالمبكي.
ويجدر الإشارة أن هذه الرواية قد فازت بجائزة نجيب محفوظ 2008.
