وقد قسمنا موضوعات الكتاب إلى اربعة أقسام، راعينا فيها الترتيب الزمني للأخبار والحوادث، كما راعيت في هذا الكتاب في هذا الكتاب سلاسة الأسلوب، وسهولة الكلمات والجمل والفقرات، فأعدت صياغة أصل أكثر القصص الواردة فيه بما يقر بها من سائر أذواق أهل زماننا.
والهدف من هذا الكتاب متعدد الجوانب، مختلف الجهات، فمن ذلك العظة والعبرة بالنظر في قصص الماضيين، وأخبار الاولين، الوقوف على نماذج مشرفة من إيمان السلف الصالح وخوفهم من الله، وكبح جماح شهواتهم ازاء مغريات النفوس وشهوات الحياة، فوائد عاقبة الصبر على المعصية من فتنة النساء وكبح الشهوات، وهناك أهداف اخرى يستجليها القارئ الكريم من النظر في قصص الكتاب بإمعان ومزيد من التأمل.
