أمضى ابن بطوطة أكثر من ثلاثين عاما من عمره في الرحلات ثم في تسجيلها حيث أخذ يملي ما يراه من أحداث ومشاهد عن بلاد العالم .
ولم يترك ابن بطوطة بلدا مر فيه إلا وصفه وذكر أهله وحكامه وعلماءه وقضاته في قالب قصصي ، وأسلوب جذاب ، قريب من لغة العامة .
ولد ابن بطوطة في طنجة بالمغرب عام 1304م لعائلة عرف عنها عملها في القضاء . وفي شبابه درس الشريعة ، ثم قرر عام 1325 م وهو ابن ال 21 عاما أن يخرج حاجا ، وأمل سفره هذا أن يتعلم المزيد عن ممارسة الشريعة في أنحاء بلاد العرب .
أعجب سلطان المغرب ابن عنان (1358-1348تقريبا) جدا بأوصاف البلاد التي قصها عليه ابن بطوطة وأمره عزيزي القارئ بان يلزم (فاس) ويضع هذه القصص في هذا الكتاب الذي نضعه الآن بين يديك . ورغم مرور مئات السنين على وفاته إلا أن ابن بطوطة بكتابه هذا لا يزال هو صاحب أطول أسفار في العالم .
