في العام 1920، وبعد اكتشاف الذهب الأسود في الأراضي التي استقرّت فيها قبيلة الأوساج من الهنود الأميركيين في أوكلاهوما، أصبحت هذه الأمّة من أغنى شعوب العالم.
عرّضها ذلك لأطماع جماعات شريرة من طبقات المجتمع الأميركي كافَّة، التي احتمت بالقانون لتنفّذ جرائمها المتسلسلة العنيفة والغريبة والغامضة بحقّ الأوساج، وأشدّها مأسوية تلك التي طالت عائلة مولي بوركهارت.
بدأ مسلسل القتل بتصفية الهنود الأغنياء، ومن ثـمّ القَتَلَة المأجورين أنفسهم الذين أوكِلوا قتل الهنود، لتصل إلى اغتيال المحقّقين الخاصّين الموكّلين جمع الأدلّة في هذه القضية، ونشر الشائعات الكاذبة لتضليل التحقيق.
على وقع هَوْلِ هذه الجرائم، تقرّرت إعادة تكوين مكتب التحقيق الفدرالي بفكر حديث ومنهجيّة علميّة بقيادة المُخضرَمين من العملاء للكشف عن أكبر مؤامرة في تاريخ الولايات المتحدة في القرن العشرين، ووضع حدّ لما سمّاه الأوساج “عهد الإرهاب”.
