يعبر في الرواية عن الخضوع غير المحدود , و الإستعداد لتقبل الذل و المهانة , بل والتمتع بذلك الذل وتلك المهانة , حتى ليظن المرء أن شخصياتهذه الرواية هم مجموعة مرضى , أ, مجانين , والحقيقة أنهم ما لا نجرؤ أن نكونه .
إن كل شخصية في هذه الرواية , قد نرى فيها قديساً أو مصاباً بالهيستيريا . إبناً باراً محباً , أو جاحداً لايهمه ما يسببه من بؤس و شقاء . وهو يريد بذلك التعبير عن الصراع الروحي و الشعوري الذي يدفع المرء إلى التضحية دونما تردد , وهذا مانجدة في هذا الحب الغريب الذي تحملة ناتاشا و كاتيا كلتيهما و هما الغريمتان للشاب الطائش الخفيف أليوشا .
كيف أمكن أن تفتن فتاة مثل ناتاشا المليئة طهارة و حرارة و عقلاً بشاب مثل أليوشا ملئ تفاهه .
كيف يمكن لناتاشا وحيدة والديها أن ترميهما في البؤس .
ذلك ما يقدمة دوستوفيسكي في هذه الرواية بعبارات عنيفة قوية تعبر عما يصف به الحب الجارف من التباس و تنناقضات .
