يعتبر دوستويفسكي واحداً من أعظم كتّاب الرواية، فأعماله تتميز بقدرة على السرد تشدّ القارئ، وبتعبيرها القوي عن دواخل النفس الإنسانية، وقد عبّر عن ذلك في عناوين رواياته التي تصف الإنسان في شتى مواقفه وتصرّفاته: المقامر - المراهق - مذلون مهانون - الجريمة والعقاب - الأبله...
ورواية "مذلون مهانون" كانت مدخل متاهة دوستويفسكي إلى المكبوت عند الإنسان، عبّر فيها عن ذلك الخضوع غير المحدود، والإستعداد لتقبّل الذلّ والمهانة، بل التمتّع بذلك الذل وتلك المهانة، حتى ليظن المرء أن شخصيات هذه الرواية هم مجموعة مرضى، أو مجانين، والحقيقة أنهم ما لا نجرؤ أن نكونه، إن دوستويفسكي يُظهر إلى النور ما نكتبه في ظلمات أنفسنا.
إن كل شخصيّة في هذه الرواية، قد نرى فيها قديساً، أو مصاباً بالهيستيريا، إبنا باراً محباً، أو جاحداً ولا يهمه ما يسببه من بؤس وشقاء، وهو يريد بذلك التعبير عن الصراع الروحي والشعوري الذي يدفع المرء إلى التضحية دونما تردّد، وهذا ما نجده في هذا الحب الغريب الذي تحمله ناتاشا وكاتيا كلتاهما، وهما الغريمتان، للشاب الطائش الخفيف أليوشا.
كيف أمكن ان تُفتن فتاة مثل ناتاشا المليئة طهارة وحرارة وعقلاً، بشاب مثل أليوشا مليء تفاهة وفراغاً وتردداً وضعفاً؛ كيف أمكن لناتاشا، وحيدة والديها، المحبّة لهما حباً لا نظير له، أن ترميهما في البؤس.
وذلك ما يقدمه لنا دوستويفسكي في هذه الرواية بعبارات عنيفة قوية تُعبّر عما يتصف به الحب الجارف من إلتباس وتناقضات.
